Marvel Studios has released details for their upcoming film projects, including some new characters that have yet to be seen in theaters. No major film releases are planned for Marvel in 2009, but 2010 & 2011 look to be quite busy with “Iron Man 2″, “Thor”, “Captain America”, and “The Avengers” all set for releases.

After an incredible opening for Iron Man this year, Iron Man 2 is set for an April 30, 2010 release date. Following Iron Man 2, Marvel Studios plans to debut new characters to the silver screen — Thor on June 4, 2010, Captain America on May 6, 2011, and The Avengers in July 2011. No information has been released in regards to other new characters that may appear in The Avengers, but 2 characters are pretty much guaranteed:

Captain Americonaughey

  • Captain America. The working title for the upcoming Captain America film is “The First Avenger: Captain America“. There is a strong rumor that Marvel is looking at signing Matthew McConaughey as the patriotic superhero. But it is WAY TOO EARLY to place bets.
  • The other guaranteed member? Well, anyone who has seen the extra scene after the credits of Iron Man knows that he will be an Avengers member as well.
  • It is still too early to know whether the Incredible Hulk will be included in The Avengers movie. Could there possibly be another extra scene after the credits of the upcoming “Incredible Hulk” movie? We’ll know for sure in June. In the original comic, Thor was also an original member of The Avengers, along with Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, Ant-Man, and Wasp. So it is natural to predict that all of these Marvel movie characters will unite in the Avengers movie.  Only time will tell.

    1. It’s likely that there will be a reference to the Avengers in these movies. There’s speculation that the extra scene in Iron Man was originally a segment of the movie, but then was cut in post-production. They later decided to put it back in after the credits and plan to have surprises in the movies featuring the original Avengers.

It’s all about timing (story- and budget-wise) and I find it excellent how Marvel Studios plans on releasing the individual stories of the heroes that eventually become The Avengers and then putting them altogether for one spectacular nerdtastic motion picture. W00t!

    2. nerdtastic FTW!
